Understanding P11D Value
What P11D value means and how it's used to calculate company car tax in the UK.
What is P11D Value?
The P11D value (also called "list price") is the official taxable value used to calculate Benefit in Kind (BiK) tax on company cars. It's named after the HMRC form P11D, which employers use to report expenses and benefits provided to employees.
For company cars, the P11D value is the car's recommended retail price when new, including VAT and any factory-fitted accessories. This value remains fixed throughout the car's life, regardless of depreciation or market value changes.
What's Included in P11D Value?

Not Included
- ℹFirst year road tax
- ℹFirst registration fee

How P11D Value Affects Your Tax
The P11D value is the starting point for calculating your company car tax. A higher P11D value means higher BiK tax, even if you negotiated a discount or the car has depreciated.
Example Impact
Finding a Car's P11D Value
1. Manufacturer's Price List
Check the manufacturer's official price list for the exact specification. This shows the "on the road" price minus road tax and first registration.
2. Online Configurators
Use the manufacturer's website to build the exact specification. The total price (with VAT) is the P11D value.
3. Your Employer
Your HR or fleet manager should provide the P11D value when you choose a company car.
4. Form P11D
Check your P11D form (sent annually after the tax year ends) which shows the exact value used for tax calculations.
Capital Contributions
If you make a capital contribution (an upfront payment towards the car's cost), you can reduce the P11D value used for BiK calculations by up to £5,000.
Example
Using Car Cost Comparison
Benefit in Kind is calculated from the P11D list price, not from what was paid. Car Cost Comparison uses that list price:
- Enter the P11D value including factory-fitted options
- See how list price feeds the cash equivalent and income tax
- Compare personal purchase costs using the same list price
Figures are illustrative. They are not a recommendation of which specification to choose.
